A white mom is upset in Pleasant Grove, Utah after her eighth grade daughter was told she must cut off her dreadlocks to conform to the charter school’s dress code. No, the white mother doesn’t have a little black baby. That’s right, her daughter, Caycee is white just like her momma, and she’s upset because “students of other ethnicities” are reportedly allowed to wear the hairstyle.

Tonya Judd, Caycee’s mother, told a local news station that she received a phone call from Principal Jake Hunt of Lincoln Academy, informing her that Caycee had to remove the dreads to return to school. According to Judd, Caycee grew the locks for religious purposes following a trip to Guatemala, in which she became immersed in Hindu beliefs.

Not only have they been racially profiling my daughter because she happens to be a while girl with dreadlocks, but it’s also taking away the rights of my daughter’s religious beliefs and her spiritual journey.”[/x_blockquote]

However, according to Principal Jake Hunt, the issue isn’t with the hairstyle itself, but rather with the maintenance or lack thereof, from what he can surmise from the appearance of Caycee’s hair.

[x_blockquote cite=”Principal Jake Hunt” type=”center”]”Our dress code says that our students’ hair must have a neat, combed appearance, be appropriate for school, and not be distracting in the classroom, which is pretty similar to what many schools in our area have.”[/x_blockquote]

While the school is open to coming to a compromise with the Judd family, Tonya is standing pat that her daughter will not be changing her hair, saying they’re willing to transfer to another school if necessary.
