A brutal beating of an elderly California man was caught on camera, as the man attempted to walk back home from his daily morning trip to get coffee at his neighborhood shopping center.

Tuyen Nguyen, an 83-year-old elderly man who has been a resident of Orange County for nearly forty years, after moving to the U.S. from Vietnam, is in critical but stable condition after sustaining a brain hemorrhage and broken facial bones.

In the video, the attacker, Demarrea Chante Barnes, is seen punching and kicking Nguyen multiple times before walking away without taking anything from the elderly man. According to Nguyen, he regularly sees Barnes in the shopping mall and has occasionally even bought the transient man coffee.

Barnes was captured in Anaheim and faces charges of felony assault and elder and dependent adult abuse with great bodily injury.

Nguyen has seven children and 12 grandchildren with his wife of 62 years. In an official statement by the family, his son, Pete Nguyen had the following to say about the overwhelming public support.

[x_blockquote cite=”Pete Nguyen, Tuyen’s son” type=”center”]“In the past four days we have met so many strangers, and the support is just so amazing. We saw the worst of human actions and then we experienced the very, very best of human kindness. We are very grateful.”[/x_blockquote]

According to the family of Barnes, he has not been received medical help or medication to combat an unspecified mental illness he suffers from. Prior to the assault of Nguyen, Barnes had been imprisoned on three prior occasions for drug and assault charges.
