If you’ve been living under a rock the past couple of days, you may have missed the news about this little movie called “Moonlight” winning the Oscar for Best Picture. However, the way the cast of “Moonlight” found out they won the award was a first in the history of the Oscars. To say it was a debacle would be a major understatement.
It all started when the legendary stars of the classic 1967 movie “Bonnie & Clyde” Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were called to present the award. Once the moment came to announce the winner, Warren Beatty paused a bit and seemed to be shuffled. Not knowing what he should do, he handed the envelope and card over to Faye Dunaway who quickly shouted, “and the winner is” drum roll please…. “La La Land“!
The crowd went wild, and the cast of La La Land made their way to the stage and started giving their acceptance speech. During the speech, one of the cast members noticed that La La Land was not the winner, and in fact, “Moonlight” was the night’s top dog for Best Picture. (See video below)
Now whether you’re into politics or not, you have to admit this debauchery felt like the election night all over again. Did Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and President Agent Orange Donald Trump rig the Oscars? I know that’s a stretch, but considering all the foolishness that’s going on in the administration right now, it wouldn’t surprise me. Nevertheless, “Moonlight” was robbed of the spotlight to shine and celebrate a great movie.
It’s being reported that this epic failure happened because Warren Beatty was given the wrong envelope by mistake. Reports say that he had the card and envelope for the previous award, which was won by Emma Stone for Best Actress in “La La Land.” Now how this even took place is still a mystery, but I’m sure the Academy will get to the bottom of it soon.
Congrats to “Moonlight” on winning the Best Picture of the year at the 89th Academy Awards.
