Joan Rivers is said to be resting at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York while she tries to recover from a surgical complication that resulted in cardiac and respiratory arrest. Her daughter Melissa gave a statement outside the hospital:

“I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”

Rivers has remained unconscious since the botched surgery, and her future is uncertain at best. A detective involved with the case told reporters that Rivers, 81, was undergoing throat surgery at a private medical clinic in New York City when she suddenly went into cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital by ambulance.

A hospital spokesman also gave a statement to the press today. It read:

“This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to. Her family wants to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.”

Rivers was well aware of the health issues she could potentially face at her age. But, always the comedian, she took a light-hearted approach to possible health complications. In a bit from her comedy show just one night before the botched surgery, Rivers joked, “I’m 81 years old and I could drop dead at any moment, and you [all] would be so lucky because then you would have a story to tell your friends for the rest of your life.”

We gotta hand it to her, even the most delicate topics aren’t off limits for Miss Mean, and that’s the mark of a truly great comedian. Get well soon, Joan!
